DESCRIPTION: Scarce Uruguayan contract Remington Rolling Block artillery short rifle made by Auguste Francotte of Liege, Belgium, and accordingly marked on the receiver tang. The round barrel displays wording, "REPUBLICA ORIENTAL", as well as "ELG" and some other Belgian markings close to the chamber on the left side, just above the stock line. The chamber displays two crossed canons. The right side of the chamber displays the maker initials underneath the crown. The right side of the buttstock displays a circular cartouche with the maker name and a name of the city of Liege (fading). The left side of the buttstock displays a smaller oval cartouche. Both sides of the buttstock show some issue, or regimental numbers, "1", "4 27", 10 4". Excellent quality of machining and parts fitting, as expected from this famous gun maker. Francotte Rolling Block rifles and carbines are very scarce in any condition. Rolling block action with loaded chamber indicator. Two step hammer. Two piece walnut stock without the handguard (correct). Concave butt plate. Ramp and leaf rear sight. Fixed front sight. The right side of the barrel has a massive bayonet lug for the saber type bayonet. Two barrel bands. Two sling swivels. Overall length: 42.5 inch. Barrel length: 27.5 inch. Complete with original cleaning rod. CONDITION: Fine. Metal shows some scattered light patina. No pitting. The stocks show the usual handling marks, light dings and scratches. The finish on the stocks is original. The right side of the buttstock has a hairline crack (just below the tang). The left side of the forestock has another hairline crack (just below the rear sights). There is a small chip on the right side of the forestock, just in front of the receiver. Excellent bore with strong and shiny rifling. Strong action. All the internal parts of the rifle are in fine condition, with no visible wear.
