Peabody Model 1867 Side Hammer Single Shot Rifle Swiss Contract cal .41 Swiss rimfire. These rifles were actually developed during the early part of the Civil War period, and were never able to get into full production for the government before the war ended. Subsequent sales were primarily military sales to foreign countries both in Europe and South America. The left side of the receiver is marked "PEABODY'S PAT. / July 22. 1862 / MAN'F'D BY / PROVIDENCE TOOL Co. / PROV. R.I.". "U" marked barrel bands, single sub inspector letter proofs on barrel bands, receiver, trigger guard, buttplate, sling bar base and lower tang and "Cross / M" Swiss acceptance marks on the barrel near the breech and on the right side of the buttstock. Full length forearm, 1918 dated brown leather sling and iron ramrod. Condition: Very Good. The barrel and buttplate exhibit a smooth, gray patina with heavy amounts of blue on the barrel bands. The rest of the metal surfaces exhibit a balance between a smooth gray patina and a mottled, gray patina. The stock is very good with some minor dings, nicks and scratches and a few minor gouges. Standard Swiss Bayonet fo Peabody Rifle. Full length quadrangular blade with Swiss markings and serial number stamped on it. Length is 19.5", overall 21.75". Condition: fine+.
