Beautiful pair of Polish 19th Century dueling/target pistols. Each with 9 1/8 inch octagonal Damascus barrel signed in gold "Wisniowiecki we Lwowie" and inlaid with gold bands at the breach. Eight groove rifling in .48 caliber. Engraved breeches and tangs numbered respectively 1 and 2. Adjustable triggers. Locks engraved with floral meander and signed consecutively as the barrels. Gild cocks, barrel wedge, escutcheons, counterscrew plates and spur triggerguards. Varnished burl walnut half-stocks, the bag shaped grips with finely checkered panels. Wrists with shoulder stock lugs covered with engraved steel plates.
Pistols were made in Lwow, Poland (today Ukraine) by J. Wisniowiecki, 1850 - 1870.
Condition: Excellent for it's age. Barrels and locks showing some minor pitting. Barrels with slight losses to gold inlay, one missing the fore-sight. One lock needs adjustment (repair) . Sound stock retains 90% plus varnish with numerous light dents and scratches.
