Scarce Imperial Russian Berdan M.2 socket bayonet. The Russian books calls the bayonet "Model 1870", while Janzen calls it "Model 1871". This was the first Russian bayonet with quadrangular blade and with screwdriver tip. Serial number is stamped on the base of the socket. The bayonet comes with an unusual leather scabbard with brass fittings. The latter does not display any markings. The scabbard shows age and is undoubtedly original. The exact origin of the scabbard is unknown. The Berdan leather scabbards were manufactured by several countries. Overall length is 23 inch. Blade length is 20.50 inch. CONDITION: Low fine. The bayonet is covered with light brown patina. The locking ring works fine. The leather scabbard is in fine condition. The leather is still soft. The stitching is strong. (Janzen p.163/2)
